Not Even 24 Hours Into the Thing

Less than 24 hours since unplugging from social media, already I am bored.

It’s quite nice.

The steady stream of people telling me all about what makes them angry is cut off. I have no clue which companies I’m supposed to boycott this week. Who said what things ten years ago and why are they problematic now? I have no way of knowing.

I haven’t been subjected to a single half-baked hot take on AI, DEI, popular economics, programming languages, gender identity, or any of the various colorful pills everyone is taking these days. Get off the pills, people.

I haven’t come across any lectures on the moral necessity for every photograph of an obese cat to include five paragraphs of detailed alt-text for people with screen readers to skip over immediately.

I haven’t been browbeaten by a crowd of virtual strangers demanding I form an opinion on something I don’t care about and then attacked for taking the wrong position on the matter. There is no opinion orthodox or contrarian enough for The Internet. You can’t win. Don’t play.

Granted, it’s early days (or, early day?), but so far, being off the socials is great.

I uploaded some of today’s new pictures to The Photos and wrote this little blog post, and I don’t have to spend the next hour visiting a bunch of different websites to let everyone know about it. Instead, I’ve got this newsletter thing I set up for anyone interested enough. That’s it. That’s what you get. Admittedly, the newsletter can be slow to load sometimes, but you’re not paying for it, and I turned off all the tracking features.1

Footnotes

  1. At least I think so. It’s hard to know for sure what a 3rd-party service is actually doing, but I toggled off all the relevant toggles I could find in my admin section. ↩
