After several weeks of stuff—travel, a family funeral, a cold that wasn’t much but still has me coughing, a broken furnace on probably the coldest night in a decade, more work than usual, at odd hours, and all of it piled atop poor sleep—I finally put my head down to rest for a few minutes this afternoon and woke up hours later.
I don’t feel any more rested for it. I will try to get to bed early tonight, but first a quick update for family and friends.
My right pinky has trigger finger now.1 That’s when the tendons that control the finger get stuck along the way, preventing it from moving smoothly. Instead it snaps into place and can even get stuck where you have to open it with your other hand. Mine isn’t that bad—yet—but I need to break down and find a new doctor to take a look at it.
I just got a Canon SELPHY CP1500 printer. It prints 4”x6” photos using a dye-sublimation process that comes out looking very much like the old Fotomat prints: high gloss, vivid colors, and tonally compressed. I only started playing with it today, but it is very fun, and excellent for proofing. You can even get the prints wet without smudging! I wish they made a larger version that could print 8”x10” or thereabouts.
I’ve also been doing fun things with this website to make it harder for strangers to get around and find things.2 I’m likely more aware than most people of the concerning possibilities of artificial intelligence and surveillance capitalism in the hands of authoritarian regimes, foreign and domestic,3 not to mention your common conmen, but that’s not my principal motivation.
The main point for me is that the internet has become too public and lacks the fun and mystery it once had, so I’m adding some back. There are basic rules for getting around that shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out if you’re a little more web-savvy than average.4 And there are also some secret mechanisms that are impractical to discover on your own. I can share those privately with interested family and friends.
It’s getting late. I have to go.
Proof. Edit. Proof. Edit. Proof. Post. Announce. Bed.
