Beefin’ with Beef
My grocery app thinks I’m a vegetarian. Presumably, pescetarian. I eat a lot of fish and mussels. I haven’t ordered any red meat in over a month.
A grass-fed choice rib eye steak is going for $50 a pound—and they sure ain’t treating the cows any better. The price of ground beef has been rising suspiciously more slowly than whole cuts. It’s enough to make the proposition of a burger unappetizing.
I shouldn’t have any problem getting enough protein. I eat fish more days than not. My cardiologist says I can eat all the egg whites I want.1 And somehow my fussy stomach is capable of digesting large quantities of beans and lentils.
So far, I haven’t missed it, red meat. We’re in demand destruction territory. I wouldn’t turn down a nice steak, but I don’t crave one. The only reason I’m even thinking about it now is the sticker shock at seeing the prices this morning.
