Happy Easter Afternoon Naptime, and Also, Happy Easter
I’m dozing off. It’s good sleeping weather today. Slightly cool. Raining. A very April vibe out here in the suburbs. There’s much chirping and singing as birds go about gathering twigs and grass for nests. A clan of white-throated sparrows has begun hanging around the backyard. They sing a lot. A pair of mourning doves is nesting in a tree out back as well. They also sing a lot, in their cooing fashion. And there are always robins and blue jays. “Bahnk, bahnk!”
I have a new bird feeder arrangement. It’s a platform on a pole staked at the edge of the patio. Everyone seems okay with the setup. The bird bath is out of the garage and back in action. It’s always a crowd pleaser with avian types. A bird bath is great for — in no particular order — drinking, splashing around, and pooping in. I got one of those tilting café umbrellas this weekend, too. It’s larger than I anticipated, but that will probably work in my favor. I’m hoping to spend more time telecommuting from the backyard this spring.
I’m already seeing some yellow jackets checking the place out. This time around, I’m familiar with the threat they pose and know their ways, so I immediately went on the offensive. Anywhere I see them buzzing around gets coated in Hot Shot Wasp & Hornet Killer. I have some boric acid baits set out, too.1 I’m going to hang up a wasp trap today or tomorrow. And I have four pounds of diatomaceous earth along with a powder duster on the way.23 Hit ‘em from every which way, hard and fast.
